Expired provisional license

When your temporary license expires, you are required to take 6 hours of classes at the driving school.

Next, you go to the town hall and you have 2 options:

  • Request an internship certificate with which you can directly take the exam with the driving school.
  • Apply for an M12 driving license with which you can drive for 1 year with a guide. You can take the practical exam at any time.

Do not let your provisional license (PCP) expire

There are 2 types of provisional driving licenses:

  • The PCP 18 months to drive alone
  • The PCP 36 months to learn with a guide

When your provisional license expires, you will have to wait 3 years to obtain another one. However, you can change your provisional license before it expires.

Example: I have an 18-month provisional license to drive alone. It ends soon and I am not yet ready for the exam. I can go to the commune BEFORE it expires with a guide to get a 36-month PCP and thus continue practicing with a guide.

It is also possible to switch from the 36-month PCP to the 18-month PCP provided that 20 hours of practical courses are completed, all before the 36-month PCP expires.

The 12-month PCP – a small bonus

When your 36-month or 18-month provisional license expires, you must wait 3 years to apply for a new 18 or 36-month PCP. However, it is possible to receive a 12-month PCP to continue practicing with a guide.

If the 12-month PCP itself expires, it cannot be extended. You will have to wait for the 3-year period, but this period starts from the expiration of the 18- or 36-month PCP.

Note that you are not required to apply for the M12 permit. You can take the exam directly with the driving school by requesting a training certificate from the town hall.
